What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a titanium post which is attached to your jawbone. An artificial tooth is attached to the titanium post, or implant, and remains permanently fixed in your mouth. We use titanium for the implant because it’s a metal which the body will not reject and will not have an allergic reaction to. In fact, your bone will start to grow around the titanium post, fusing to it and anchoring it securely in place.
What Is the Dental Implant Procedure?
Each person’s situation is unique, so the first step is to determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants. Once we’ve established that implants are right for you, we can start the implant procedure.
A small hole is drilled in your jawbone so the titanium implant post can be attached. This post acts like a root for the artificial tooth (crown) which will be attached later.
As the bone heals, it will fuse to the titanium post, anchoring it firmly. Because the healing process is gradual, it will take several weeks to a few months before the implant is securely anchored and ready to receive the crown.
Once the implant is securely fused in the bone, we attach a metal piece, called an “abutment,” to the implant. This abutment holds the crown, which is your new, permanently attached tooth.
How Do I Know If Dental Implants Are Right for Me?
Most people who are in good health are excellent candidates for dental implants. Factors which may affect how well implants will work for you are any health issues which would interfere with healing or extensive bone loss in your jaw from missing teeth.
