Extractions (Simple and Wisdom Teeth)

There are two kinds of tooth extractions: simple extractions and complex ones, the kind often needed for wisdom teeth.

A simple tooth extraction is started by separating the tooth from surrounding tissue with a special tool called an “elevator.” The tooth must then be rocked back and forth to loosen it. When loosened, it can be removed with a pair of forceps which is a dental implement for grasping teeth.

A complex extraction needs a more involved approach to cleanly and completely remove the tooth. This need could arise because the tooth is broken, fragile and likely to break, or because it is impacted, meaning it is not emerging properly from the jaw.

Impacted teeth can be tightly bound to the jawbone or positioned in such a way that they have no room to erupt (break through the gum). If left untreated, infections or cysts can form in the area. It’s important to extract them before they can create other problems.

  • Surgical Extractions

Most wisdom teeth extractions require a more advanced approach to remove them. Again, the process starts with numbing and any other sedation or anesthesia needed. The gum tissue over the tooth and its roots will be opened so the tooth can be accessed. It may be necessary to remove some bone before removing the tooth. The tooth may even need to be cut into parts to remove it cleanly. A few stitches may be needed to close up this area after the tooth is extracted.

What is most important is that every part of the tooth and all its roots are fully removed so that your gums will heal properly afterwards.

  • After the Extraction

Great care is taken at every step of an extraction to minimize injury to gum or bone tissue. But still, it is expected that a patient will be sore for a few days. It’s important to avoid smoking or sucking on a straw because this could remove the protective blood clot that forms in the extraction site. Also do not spit, blow up a balloon or rinse your mouth.

Pain can normally be handled with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen. If your surgery was more extensive, we may prescribe a prescription pain reliever for you.

What If You Are Concerned About Your Upcoming Extraction?

Neither type of extraction should cause a patient any concern. The first step of any extraction is a thorough numbing of the area around the target tooth so the patient stays comfortable. If further pain medication is needed, one of our dentists, is a specialist in anesthesiology for dentistry. When a patient needs further assistance for pain or anxiety, he is expert in providing this kind of care.
