Root Canals
While some people are apprehensive about getting a root canal, our patients find that in our experienced hands, getting a root canal can be a smooth procedure. Our dentists have the expertise to make this procedure as fast and comfortable as possible while getting an excellent result.
A root canal may be needed when the soft, live tissue inside your tooth is injured by an impact, or when the tooth becomes cracked or fractured or has a deep cavity. Any of these conditions allow bacteria to penetrate to the inner tissues where they can thrive. The inner tissues then become infected and inflamed.
Many teeth so affected can still be saved with root canal therapy. If the tooth is not treated, it is likely to become abscessed and painful.
Why Is It Called Root Canal Therapy?
You may already know that the roots of your teeth connect with your body’s blood supply so that the live, inner part of your tooth has a rich supply of blood. This live tissue is referred to as the pulp of your tooth. There is a small chamber of pulp near the top of your tooth and then a canal filled with pulp that travels to the end of each root. Some teeth have one root and other teeth have as many as four. As part of this therapy, the pulp in these canals is cleaned out all the way to the end of the root. The soft tissue is replaced with sterile material.
Root Canal Procedure
Before starting any treatment, a dentist carefully examines the x-ray so he or she knows the exact shape and condition of each root. The patient is then fully numbed for comfort during the procedure. The top of the tooth is opened just like it would be for a filling. But then, the soft inner tissue is fully cleaned out and the canal is gently shaped so it is clean and straight. A material is used to fill the canals and then the opening at the top of the tooth is filled in.
It is advisable to crown this tooth soon after the root canal. After this live tissue is removed, the tooth will become more brittle. A crown will protect this tooth for many years.
